Anticipation

One of my two favorite professors types alluded to their book list and the coming summer. Now, I know you're still busy, but does your load lighten enough to regain that feeling anticipation about summer that we had as kids?

My mom would let me check out as many books as I could carry, although looking back, I don't know why she never gave me a tote or something. I could do my yearly re-reads of favorite series and discover new books in the stacks. I remember the summer my youth Fretz Park Library card was stamped "adult collection", so I could check out books from anywhere in the library.

Because if she gave you a tote, she knew that you might bring home even more books? :-)

I just have to finish grading my last final, and I'll be done! (I have one or two other administrative things I need to do, but nothing really big.) The anticipation isn't quite as keen because I still have laundry, cleaning, etc. to do - but I still get that feeling of excitement, knowing that my schedule will be so much more open! I spent part of today (when I was *supposed* to be grading) reading on the screened porch, smelling the lilacs that just started blooming. I totally felt like I was playing hooky.

Yes, yes, and yes. The pace of life for me in summer is so relaxed compared to the school year. I have admin responsibilities at the Writing Center but technically that's about 20 hours a week. Since I'm not teaching, I don't have essays to respond to. Don't get me wrong! I love reading student writing but it takes so much time. Basically, I go from a 60+ hour work week to 20. Lovely.

I read more, work out regularly, and clean more consistantly. And, yes, I'm excited to work my way through my very large books to read list. Actually, I'm going to tackle that huge pile of books I own that I haven't read because I've run out of shelf space.

I hear you about book shelf space. J. really needs another one, but he has perfected my mom's arrangement of two deep. And yes, he can usually find an older book when he needs to!

I still don't get how my "to-read" list keeps getting longer so much faster than my "finished" list!

I was having the same thought. Now instead of the huge word documents of titles from Powell's, I have the Goodreads version. Hmmm. I'm trying to not let that growing list pressure me into reading faster and not enjoying things.

I don't know if I'm impressed at how much I read during the academic year or if I should be worried that I'm spending too much time reading for fun. Arghhh. Though I suppose it's better to read than to take up less wholesome habits like drinking gin & tonics or gambling or dealing pot (I just watched the first episode of Weeds . . . )

I keep an email file of all the Daily Dose books that have sounded appealing since I started subscribing in September 2002. I have deleted the ones I have read, and I know that some books are on it twice. Still, there are 613 messages in there, with only minimal overlap with my Goodreads to-read list. I feel that Goodreads is a more public announcement of intention, so I only put the books I'm pretty certain I'll read on it; I save far more in my email file.

I, too, am looking forward to summer, but my life does not get that much less complicated in the summer. that is why I crave CABIN time.

The cabin is the only time I can read, read read read. The cabin has always been my sacred reading place. When I was a kid, my cousins would hide my books when we came - so I'd play with them rather than read. My family, to this day, teases me relentlessly about "the hammock" whenever I'm on it - it's where I READ! Can you imagine a better afternoon than sitting in a hammock, next to the lake, with the perfect book and a drink? The last four Harry Potter books were all read there....

Yes, a hammock sounds perfect!
