I just picked up ten books from the my reserve area of the library today and there are six or seven sitting around the house! (curse my memorization skills and that darn personalized library barcode!) How do you decide what to read next? Much of the time I feel constrained by the non-renewable books and have to read them first, even if I'm not necessarily in the mood for them.
I find stopping for a bit, reading EW and watching Heroes takes some of the pressure off the sight of the Stack. I'm enjoying the goodreads world with you all, but boy, it adds to that growing list at the library!

I, too, have found that goodreads has considerably increased my list of books to read! I'll never make it through them all.... I'm already overwhelmed by my bookclub reading list, so am very familiar with the feeling. I tend to not always read all of those, however, and given my list, am quick to quit a book that's not grabbing me. Right now, however, I'm not even reading one on my bookclub list!!
I laughed when I read this post because I'm constantly getting seduced by the Bestseller section in CLC's library or the 14-day section of my local public library. The advantage of CLC's selection is as a faculty member, I don't have to pay fines. Meanwhile, my tendency to grab too many 14-day books means I'm funding the public library quite regularly with my fines.
My "guilt" pile is huge. Every year the Friends of the Lake Forest Library (LF is an "affluent" suburb to my south) have an incredible book sale. I went this year and only bought 8 books but I still have about 15 books from last year's sale sitting in my home office. And that's not counting other books I have sitting around. I'm trying to work through the books I have (so I can pass along, re-sell, or decide to keep) yet I keep browsing that Bestsellers section. Sigh.

My library just added a "request book" function to its online catalog (before this, one had to fill out a paper slip at the library in person), and since then I've been going bonkers requesting stuff. Even when I have a pile of already-checked-out books on the bedside table. Plus the pile of books that I bought at the biannual library booksale (like Jen...affluent suburb, cheap new books). Must...pace...self....
Glad to hear we all surrender to the lure of easy reserving, no fines, and goodreads recommendations! I feel less overwhelmed knowing we're all swimming in good stuff to read together! I'm hoping to catch up a bit this weekend as C will be taking dau. and friend up to UMD to look around as a possible back-up school. However, I think the local UofM is her back-up of choice right now.
