1980s Help!

M is doing research for a summer school class called "Spinning Through the Decades." She has decided to interview me about the 80s. So, fellow Carls of the 80s, help me out!! Movies, music, tv shows, fads, popular pastimes, fashions, famous people, events.... Any favorites come to mind? I've got quite a bit, but could use your help!!

J. just did the 60's for an end of the year project and I kept telling him the year of my birth would have made a great entry on his timeline, to no avail!

Um, wasn't the big one the invention and release of our favorite, Diet Coke!!!!

And not only did prep (I'm sure a former Wayzatan remembers that!) begin the decade, but remember that whole prairie look thing before it gave way to Flashdance clothes and then big shoulder pads!

There are certain things that probably won't cycle back around!

Egad - you are right! Diet Coke came out when we were juniors or seniors in high school! I remember it well! Definitely gets an entry in the events section....

I just asked Eric, and his response was, "Members Only jackets."

Fashion, besides what Julia listed: early 80's was shiny makeup and animal prints (or was that just Berkeley?), and then Madonna-inspired clothes: lace hairbands, thrift-store layers, the little gloves. Pegged pants, skinny ties, collars up.

Music: Madonna, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson "Thriller"...there are radio stations that do all-80's, and I'm amazed how many of my students are well-versed in 80's music. 80's fashion may not (and should not!) come back, but the music certainly did. (I have seen girls in legwarmers and ripped shirts on campus and want to tell them not to do it!)

Start of MTV! Before that, remember Friday Night Videos?

Quintessential 80's movies: "Ghostbusters," "Top Gun," was "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in the 80's?

Wow, this is fun! I'm sure I'll think of more...
